Cider Brandy

Cider Brandy

The Somerset Cider Brandy Company revived the tradition of distilling cider in 1987 when it obtained the first commercial
distilling license in England’s recorded history. Burrow Hill Cider in South Somerset at the base of Burrow Hill
has been pressing cider for the past 150 years.

Somerset Cider Brandy has a Protected Geographical Indication, giving it an "appellation contrôlée“.

Today these brandys are sold in some of the most prestigious London shops – including Harrods and Fortnum&Mason – and offered in four of the Sunday Times Britain’s top 10 restaurants of 2013, including the number 1.

  1. Somerset Alchemy 15 Year Old Cider Brandy 42%

Somerset Alchemy 15 Year Old Cider Brandy 42%

Alchemy is a philosophical tradition whose practitioners are best known for their quest to create gold. Distillers are alchemists in pursuit of liquid gold.

    TASTING NOTES
Golden in colour, this Brandy has finess, smoothness and is very mellow. Very long on the palate. Rich apple nose despite the fifteen years that have passed. There is caramel there and some nuttiness, and exotic vanilla. Alchemy is slightly lighter than the Ten Year Old as it is matured in a slightly different barrel mix.

    HOW TO ENJOY
Sommeliers have described Alchemy as a feminine drink compared to the Ten Year Old that is distinctively masculine in its character. Either way, it is a liquid gold and deserves to be treated accordingly.

  2. Somerset 10 Year Old Cider Brandy 42%

Somerset 10 Year Old Cider Brandy 42%vol 70cl

Ten years has mellowed a fine spirit into a smooth complex brandy, full of subtle bouquets and aromas. One needs to take time to appreciate the harmony of flavours.

    TASTING NOTES
The 10 Year Old is rich and aromatic on the nose. There are aromas of baked apples, spices like nutmeg and vanilla and creaminess. The palate is rich, soft and full. As expected there are distinctive Burrow Hill cider apple flavours with subtle oaky characteristics. The palate has depth and length and is very clean. Long, dry delicately spiced aftertaste. Harmonious, complex and warming.

    HOW TO ENJOY
One of the favourites of London restauranteurs for a perfect digestif to end a fine meal. It is also great with chocolates, chocolate dessert and apple based desserts or cakes.

  3. Somerset 5 Year Old Cider Brandy 42%

Somerset 5 Year Old Cider Brandy 42%vol 70cl

Matured in small oak barrels for five years. Company’s flagship brandy for restaurants, the five year old has traded some of the overwhelming apples and cider characteristics of the three year old for creaminess.

    TASTING NOTES
This has lost some of the apple of Somerset Royal but is smoother and far more complex with a velvety palate and a sweet spicy aftertaste. It is nice and warming, whilst the apple flavours linger and develop. More of oak than in the three-year-old, a hint of cider, vanilla and cream notes with an earthy flavour too. The aftertaste is mostly warming, and the creaminess of the cider brandy lingers at the back of the tongue.

    HOW TO ENJOY
It is very much an after dinner brandy.

  6. Apple Eau-de-Vie 40%

    Somerset Apple Eau-de-Vie 40%vol 35cl

Unaged cider brandy, coming directly from the two continous stills named Josephine and Fifi. Tim Edwards, the master distiller of Somerset Cider Brandy Company, spends the better part of spring each year to distill up to half a million liter of last year’s cider into fine spirit.

    TASTING NOTES
Crystal clear in appearance and with clean, wonderfully aromatic ripe apple juice aroma. Honest taste, rather than absolutely pure palate which retains lightly spiced fresh apple juice and apple pie flavours. Medium, slightly bitter finish with lingering fresh apple flavours.

    HOW TO ENJOY
Call it “schnapps” or water of life, it is up to you, but this new-born brandy is equally enjoyable as ice cold straight up or for room temperature savouring.
